Question 6: what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?& Question 7: looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in this progression from it to the main task?
Although I was not heavily involved in the editing I do believe I have grown a lot with the use of a camera from my preliminary making sure the shots are in focus ( despite the poor effort on the video below) and setting up and using a tripod. The camera we used is a Nikon DLSR. Despite this, I did have a play around using tutorials from youtube to help bridge the lack of knowledge.
The editing for both our preliminary and our final thriller production was done in premier pro, and with this being quite advanced technology we came together to create a well thought out and professional look. The staple piece in our film (as you can see from above) is the intense colour correction, making the reds so vibrant in all the scenes. We also had a unique secret weapon being the graphics tablet a member of my group had making it easier to get those tiny details just right. It also helped us create an eerie atmosphere, as in some scene we filmed in daylight but we wanted it to look as though it was night time in order to fit in the storyline.
The final technology we used was after effects, we used this program to create our titles and our company ident. Again this was made using youtube tutorials, to get to grips with the basics and we went from them.
Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
conventions of the thriller genre by bayley Siddall
Crimson requiem incorporated a lot of
typical thriller conventions while not being conventional at all with the story
line, so with this we created something slightly out of the ordinary but
without having to lose or skip out on any crucial conventions.
So with this in mind we used a lot of low
key lighting to create a dingy and mysterious look which therefore helped achieve
and eerie feel to the thriller. Interestingly, to achieve this feeling we
actually filmed in very well lit areas but after the colour correction had
taken place and we alerted the saturations etc. It then made the scenes look a
lot darker than they was originally shot, but this is exactly how we intended
the shots should look.
One of the most influential points in our
thriller and my personal favorite is the jump cut montage another big feature
in thrillers which incorporates a multitude of different settings and events,
due to the atypical storyline. This feature helps lay out the story and gives
the audience something to entertain themselves with due to the mystery of the
plot.
The protagonist in our thriller film is
shown from many different shots, to firstly be able to set the scene when the
film begins, in a low lit room waking up but its interesting because that shot
and the one following the red is amplified indicating something bad is going to
happen or has happened and in this case its already happened due to the plot.
But this is not the only key feature when it comes to the protagonist, in fact
the antagonist is seen to be weak and oblivious to what is going on in her
surroundings. We see them cuddled up together on a sofa in a lovely calm
surrounding with bright colours, leading the audience into false hope for the
situation at hand. But we do see a lot of gruesome fighting between them both,
mostly coming from the protagonist. Once again this supports normal thriller
conventions and helped us create the on edge feeling for the audience.
Finally one of the key parts that sets us
slightly apart from other thriller films is the baking tracks used, as they create a comical affect with the
upbeat and unusual tempo with them. Although I believe this slightly takes away
from it being a hard hitting thriller, non the less it still helps the audience
understand the storyline better. The music helps despite being slightly comical
to create a strange feeling for the audience showing something isn’t quite
right. Ultimately, helping with out overall feeling of Crimson requiem.
